Trash includes bottles, corrugated boxes, food, grass clippings, sofas, computers, tires and refrigerators.

The average person generates nearly 5 pounds of trash every day.  "Trash" can actually be recycled. Approximately 69 million tons were recycled and 25 million tons were composted.

Electronic waste are the most accumulated types of trash. 

The United States is the top producer of municipal solid waste, or MSW, in the entire world, generating about 268 million tons every year. The landfill is the most popular destination for solid waste.

TOXIC GAS IS PRODUCED FROM TRASH. Methane and carbon dioxide make up 90 to 98% of landfill gas. The remaining 2 to 10% includes nitrogen, oxygen, ammonia, sulfides, hydrogen and various other gases. Landfill gases are produced when bacteria break down organic waste.

The creation of landfills typically means destroying natural habitats for wildlife. The average landfill size is 600 acres. With over 3,000 active landfills in the United States, as much as 1,800,000 acres of habitat have been lost. 

There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer litter the deep sea. By 2040, it will nearly triple, adding 23-37 million metric tons of waste into the ocean per year. This means about 50kg of plastic per meter of coastline. Because of this, all marine life, from plankton and shellfish; to birds, turtles and mammals; faces the grave risk of toxification, behavioral disorder, starvation and suffocation.

New York divides responsibility for handling trash between a public and a private system; together they spend $2.3 billion annually.
